Faithlegg’s Jim McLeane beat off the challenge of 32 golfers to emerge victorious in the inaugural Race to Portugal competition hosted by the Algarve’s luxurious Monte da Quinta resort.
McLeane was in the first group out on the opening day and led by example as he scored 38 points on Quinta do Lago’s challenging South course to lead the individual competition with a commanding five-point advantage over his nearest rival, Pat Healy, of Portmuna GC.
A second-round score of 32 was enough to secure McLeane the title, finishing five shots clear of second-placed Jonny Kingsbury, from Harleyford GC, while Healey slipped back to third, a further three points behind.
Kingsbury went one better in the pairs’ competitions which he and partner Jon Jones won for Harleyford, with their 122-point total beating McLeane and his son Joseph into second place.
The golfers from England and Ireland all qualified from competitions at their home clubs which won them a place in the grand final as part of a week-long holiday in the spectacular Monte da Quinta resort.
Monte da Quinta’s collection of 132 self-catering suites is one of the newest accommodation options in the Algarve and includes one, two and three-bedroom layouts, with each providing a tranquil, spacious environment for guests to enjoy during their stay.
Competitors were able to enjoy Quinta do Lago’s North and Laranjal courses as well as familiarising themselves with the South layout before the tournament. And the resort’s location on the prestigious estate – nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ria Formosa Natural Park – and outstanding leisure facilities allowed plenty of opportunity for relaxation away from the fairways.
The event itinerary also featured a presentation from mind coach Steve Sharpley, a welcome reception and gala dinner with prize-giving.
The Race to Portugal will return to Monte da Quinta in 2011 and organisers are looking for more clubs to hold free qualifying events for their members. To get your club involved contact organiser Cyril Griffith on 07824 385101.
