Melbourne Cup 2012 will take place on Tuesday and nothing would please Australian trainer Wayne Hawkes more than to bring the title back home.

French horses Dunaden and Americain have won the past two Melbourne Cups and many have conceded this year’s cup will head to Europe for another year.

But Hawkes, who trains Cup runners Niwot and Maluckyday with dad John and brother Michael, is hoping this could be the year to steal one back for the locals.

“There’s not many of us locals but we’ll be happy to send the Europeans back if we’re good enough,” Hawkes said at the cup barrier draw today.

Both Niwot and Maluckyday buck the trend in this year’s cup field in that they are both Australian bred and trained.

Maluckyday will be out to go one better after finishing second to Americain in 2010 while Niwot finished eighth last year.

Hawkes is thrilled to have both stayers fit and showing promise heading into this year’s cup, with both having battled injury and illness in the past.

“For a couple of old crocks hopefully they’ll do Australia proud,” he said.

“From a trainer’s point of view it’s actually quite amazing to have these horses both up and in good form.”

Maluckyday was second in the Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington last month and after missing the start in the Geelong Cup still managed to run home strongly.

He is the highest rated Australian runner in the bookmaker.com.au Melbourne Cup market at $13 and while Hawkes admits he is their best hope, he is not ruling out Niwot.

“He was only beaten three lengths last year. He won the Sydney Cup, I think he’s going alright,” he said.

Niwot is rated a $41 Melbourne Cup chance.

Apart from Maluckyday, the major Australian-trained hopes appear to be Green Moon ($15), Ethiopia ($17) and Lights Of Heaven ($31).

With the Melbourne Cup 2012 field and barriers now known it is time to work out your 2012 Melbourne Cup tips for Tuesday’s $6 million race.

The field this year is considered to be one of the best in recent times, meaning there are plenty of good horses to choose from.

So if you are not sure who to back in the prestigious staying test, keep reading as we are here to bring you some high quality Melbourne Cup 2012 tips.

1st – Mount Athos ($8.50) – bookmaker.com.au.

From the yard of high profile international trainer Luca Cumani, Mount Athos brings excellent form into the Melbourne Cup.

He won his last three races prior to arriving in Australia including a barnstorming 3 1/2 length win in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes in August.

Cumani is deliberately sending the Montjeu gelding into the race without a lead-up, believing he performs at this best fresh.

He gets in well at the weights with 54kg and has drawn ideally in barrier eight.

“Eight is great,” Cumani said after the barrier draw.

2nd – Americain ($5.00) – bookmaker.com.au.

The 2010 winner is a seasoned performer and showed he can carry weight last year when carrying 58kg when fourth.

Last year’s winner Dunaden goes to 59kg this year, leaving Americain well placed to again feature as a top Melbourne Cup contender.

Star Australian jockey Damien Oliver goes aboard here and he should be able to position the French galloper in a good position from 2012.

He loves Australian conditions and ran home strongly to finish fourth in the Caulfield Cup.

Will stay all day.

3rd – Ethiopia – ($19.00) – bookmaker.com.au.

He is one of the few Australian owned and bred runners in the market and he probably represents the best local hope.

Won the Australian Derby in the autumn where he showed his staying potential.

Was previously considered a backmarker but ran a strong fourth when ridden forward in the Cox Plate.

Carries just 53.5kg and drawn reasonably in barrier 14. Emerging talent.

Whether you agree with these tips or not, pick your winners then ensure you are getting the best odds by betting at bookmaker.com.au – the Australian owned bookie with the $400 bonus bet offer for new customers.

Mount Athos may have a bigger profile in the Melbourne Cup 2012 field but trainer Luca Cumani has warned not to rule out his second contender My Quest For Peace.

Mount Athos is rated an $8.50 chance to win the 2012 Melbourne Cup but the high profile international trainer thinks his $26 runner My Quest For Peace is also a genuine chance.

“Both my horses are very well,” Cumani said.

“I think Mount Athos should be a little bit longer [than he is] and My Quest For Peace a little bit shorter.”

The pair are two of many international contenders in the field for Tuesday’s $6 million staying test which is headed in the bookmaker.com.au market by Americain and Dunaden.

Americain is a $5 favourite after drawing favourably in barrier 12 while Dunaden ($6.50) will be out to defend his title from barrier 16.

Americain part-owner Gerry Ryan is confident the favourite heads into the race in excellent condition but admits he comes up against a hot field.

“We’re going to be very competitive,” Ryan said.

“The horse can run in any condition, he proved that at Caulfield so let’s give it our best shot.

“This year’s field is the best he’s ever run in, we need to have every one percent up our sleeves as the one percents make 100 percent.”

Also featuring towards the top end of the market is Red Cadeaux who is $10 to go one better than the second he produced last year.

Trainer Ed Dunlop will again send the British gelding into the Melbourne Cup without a lead-up and is confident that will allow him to perform his best.

“He runs very well fresh, my team have done a great job, he’s a horse in the past that proven that he’s runs well first time out,” Dunlop said.

The 2012 Melbourne Cup field and odds have been released and 2010 winner Americain is favourite after drawing barrier 12.

The French star is rated a $5 chance at bookmaker.com.au to claim his second Melbourne Cup title and he will come from a familiar position after winning the race from barrier 11 two years ago.

Fellow French Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden is hot on his tail in the market at $6.50 but will have to overcome a wide barrier 16 draw.

But the barrier shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for last year’s champion who was ridden by Craig Williams to Caulfield Cup victory from the outside last month.

Luca Cumani-trained gelding Mount Athos has featured prominently in Melbourne Cup markets all year and he currently occupies the third line of betting at $8.50.

The emerging stayer drew barrier eight and Cumani said he couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“Eight is great. Before hand when I was asked what draw would you like I said between 8 and 12,” Cumani said.

But Cumani has warned not to discount his other Cup runner, with My Quest For Peace currently at $26.

“I think Mount Athos should be a little bit longer [than he is] and My Quest For Peace a little bit shorter,” he said.

Fourth in the betting market is Red Cadeaux ($9.50) who was a narrow runner-up to Dunaden in 2011.

No other runner falls under double figures, with Australia’s top rated hope Maluckyday the next best in the market at $13.

Maluckyday will be out to turn the tables on Americain after finishing second in Australia’s biggest race in 2010.

Others towards the top of the market include the Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon ($14) Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice ($17) and Cox Plate fourth Ethiopia ($18).

The 2012 Melbourne Cup barrier draw has taken place for Tuesday’s $6 million staying race with top fancy Americain receiving barrier 12.

The French stayer is chasing his second Melbourne Cup title after winning in 2010 as is 2011 winner Dunaden who will run from barrier 16.

The pair have shown they are ready to again feature in Australia’s biggest race with Dunaden winning the Caulfield Cup and Americain running home strongly for fourth.

British stayer Red Cadeaux was beaten in tight finish by Dunaden last year and will have to overcome a wide barrier 18 draw if he is to go one better this year.

Luca Cumani‘s highly-rated chance Mount Athos was one of the top chances at bookmaker.com.au prior to the barrier draw and has received a favourable barrier eight draw for his first run on Australian soil.

He is one of two Cumani-owned runners in the field with the Australian-owned My Quest For Peace chasing Melbourne Cup glory from the inside barrier.

After drawing wide when favourite in the Caulfield Cup, top Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse would have been relieved to see the number seven when the barrier for Glencadam Gold was revealed.

He is one of two Waterhouse runners striving to deliver the Sydney trainer her first Melbourne Cup with fellow import Fiorente to make his Australian debut from barrier two.

Bart Cummings is striving for yet another Melbourne Cup win and the barrier draw was kind to his Americain import Sanagas (4) but not so Precedence (20).

Other notable barriers include Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice (11), Godolphin’s Cavalryman (6), Peter Moody-trained mare Lights Of Heaven (17), Lloyd Williams’ Green Moon (5) and Cox Plate fourth placegetter Ethiopia (14).

The final 24-horse Melbourne Cup 2012 field (3200m) has been announced, with the prestigious Group 1 staying race to take place at Flemington on Tuesday.

This year’s Melbourne Cup field is considered to be one of the strongest in recent times and contains no surprises.

Heading the field are French former Melbourne Cup winners Americain and Dunaden who are the favourites at bookmaker.com.au for the $6 million staying test.

One of the biggest talking points of this year’s Melbourne Cup field is the inclusion of Chris Waller-trained gelding Kelinni who earned his spot in the field by winning the Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington today.

The British import will be ridden by Glen Boss and received no penalty for his Lexus win meaning he will carry just 51kg.

In past years there have been major attrition rates leading into the announcement of the Melbourne Cup field but just 2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed was withdrawn from the top 24 horses today.

It is a star-studded field dominated by international horses including 2011 runner-up Red Cadeaux, Luca Cumani-trained pair Mount Athos and My Quest For Peace, American St Leger winner Jakkalberry and the Godolphin-owned Cavalryman.

Prominent locally-trained horses in the field include Cox Plate fourth placegetter Ethiopia, Peter Moody-trained mare Lights Of Heaven, 2010 runner-up Maluckyday and Lloyd Williams-owned pair Mourayan and Green Moon.

High profile Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse is still striving to achieve her first Melbourne Cup victory and has accepted with both Caulfield Cup failure Glencadam Gold and her recently acquired import Fiorente.

Legendary Australian trainer Bart Cummings narrowly missed out on getting Dare To Dream into the field when he finished second to Kelinni in the Lexus Stakes but will still have two runners with Precedence and American import Sanagas.

Cummings is a Melbourne Cup legend having won 12 titles with the most recent Viewed in 2008.

Others in the field include Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice, Team Hawkes’ Niwot, Leon Corstens-trained four-year-old Zabeelionaire, imports Winchester and Voila Ici and Michael Kent-trained pair Unusual Suspect and Tac De Boistron.

French pair Brigantin and Shahwardi were considered big chances if they were to make the field but connections paid dearly for not running in today’s ballot exempt races as did Godolphin who saw Lost In The Moment miss out.

Ciaron Maher-trained gelding Moudre moved into the final 24 when Southern Speed was withdrawn this morning but was the unlucky runner to make way for Kelinni.

They say you should never be scared of one horse and the 2011 Crown Oaks field that will line up today looks very different to the one last Saturday.

Luxbet had Atlantic Jewel at $1.15 in the 2011 Crown Oaks field betting such was her dominance over the three-year-old fillies this season and particularly in Saturday’s Wakeful Stakes (2000m).

Gliding

Gliding aiming to be Bart's 10th Crown Oaks winner

All in betting with Luxbet had the rest of the 2011 Crown Oaks field over double figure odds.

Then the shock on Sunday when Atlantic Jewel’s trainer Mark Kavanagh withdrew the filly after she pulled up sore.

Now the betting on the 2011 Crown Oaks field is far more open.

Robert Smerdon didn’t listen to the adage and was avoiding Atlantic Jewel before the quick shift this week.

She will carry the number one saddlecloth in the 2011 Crown Oaks field and Luxbethave her at $4.20.

The race for the Edward Manifold winner is somewhat an afterthought with the worry being she may not het the 2500m need for the 2011 Crown Oaks field to cover.

The distance query is held over all the fillies but one who looks stout is the 2011 Crown Oaks field favourite Dowager Queen Luxbet $3.70.

She was beaten out of sight by Atlantic Jewel in thwe Wakeful but was clearly the second best run in the race making good ground over the final stages in the 2000m event.

Trainer Graeme Rogerson is talking up her chances and he knows a bit about VRC Oaks winners having trained Grand Archway to victory in 1998.

Bart Cummings has a great record in the Oaks and will be trying for his tenth winner with Gliding.

Cummings has won the VRC Oaks with Light Fingers (1964), Sanderae (1970), Leica Star (1974), Taj Eclipse (1983), Tristanagh (1989), Weekend Delight (1990), Richfield Lady (1991), Magical Miss (2001) and Faint Perfume (2009).

Luxbet believe Gliding is an eachway chance in the 2011 Crown Oaks field and have made her $7 fixed odds.

The only other horse under double figure odds in the 2011 Crown Oaks field is Rahveel.

It is trained by one of Cummings’s old foreman Leon Corstens.

Being by Zabeel she is definitely bred to get the journey and Luxbet fear her for that fact and have her at $7.
