Team Dunaden are delighted with the horse’s wide barrier, after drawing gate 16 of 24 in the Melbourne Cup field 2012.

Dunaden won the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup at Caulfield Racecourse last start, proving that he is in top from ahead of Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup 2012.

However, his owner feels that he will have improved even further from his last run.

“We are very pleased with the horse as we thought he was 80 per cent fit for the Caulfield Cup and he has come on a lot since then,” the Sheikh revealed.

“He has come on a lot since then and is 100 per cent for the Melbourne Cup.

“The horse loves Australia, he definitely improves down here.”

Dunaden is currently paying odds of $7 to win the 2012 Melbourne Cup and is on the second line of betting.

Melbourne Cup 2012 will take place on Tuesday and nothing would please Australian trainer Wayne Hawkes more than to bring the title back home.

French horses Dunaden and Americain have won the past two Melbourne Cups and many have conceded this year’s cup will head to Europe for another year.

But Hawkes, who trains Cup runners Niwot and Maluckyday with dad John and brother Michael, is hoping this could be the year to steal one back for the locals.

“There’s not many of us locals but we’ll be happy to send the Europeans back if we’re good enough,” Hawkes said at the cup barrier draw today.

Both Niwot and Maluckyday buck the trend in this year’s cup field in that they are both Australian bred and trained.

Maluckyday will be out to go one better after finishing second to Americain in 2010 while Niwot finished eighth last year.

Hawkes is thrilled to have both stayers fit and showing promise heading into this year’s cup, with both having battled injury and illness in the past.

“For a couple of old crocks hopefully they’ll do Australia proud,” he said.

“From a trainer’s point of view it’s actually quite amazing to have these horses both up and in good form.”

Maluckyday was second in the Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington last month and after missing the start in the Geelong Cup still managed to run home strongly.

“He was only beaten three lengths last year. He won the Sydney Cup, I think he’s going alright,” he said.

The 2012 Melbourne Cup field and odds have been released and 2010 winner Americain is favourite after drawing barrier 12.

The French star is rated a $5 chance at bookmaker.com.au to claim his second Melbourne Cup title and he will come from a familiar position after winning the race from barrier 11 two years ago.

Fellow French Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden is hot on his tail in the market at $6.50 but will have to overcome a wide barrier 16 draw.

But the barrier shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for last year’s champion who was ridden by Craig Williams to Caulfield Cup victory from the outside last month.

Luca Cumani-trained gelding Mount Athos has featured prominently in Melbourne Cup markets all year and he currently occupies the third line of betting at $8.50.

The emerging stayer drew barrier eight and Cumani said he couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“Eight is great. Before hand when I was asked what draw would you like I said between 8 and 12,” Cumani said.

But Cumani has warned not to discount his other Cup runner, with My Quest For Peace currently at $26.

“I think Mount Athos should be a little bit longer [than he is] and My Quest For Peace a little bit shorter,” he said.

Fourth in the betting market is Red Cadeaux ($9.50) who was a narrow runner-up to Dunaden in 2011.

No other runner falls under double figures, with Australia’s top rated hope Maluckyday the next best in the market at $13.

Maluckyday will be out to turn the tables on Americain after finishing second in Australia’s biggest race in 2010.

Others towards the top of the market include the Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon ($14) Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice ($17) and Cox Plate fourth Ethiopia ($18).

The final 24-horse Melbourne Cup 2012 field (3200m) has been announced, with the prestigious Group 1 staying race to take place at Flemington on Tuesday.

This year’s Melbourne Cup field is considered to be one of the strongest in recent times and contains no surprises.

Legendary Australian trainer Bart Cummings narrowly missed out on getting Dare To Dream into the field when he finished second to Kelinni in the Lexus Stakes but will still have two runners with Precedence and American import Sanagas.

Cummings is a Melbourne Cup legend having won 12 titles with the most recent Viewed in 2008.

Others in the field include Irish stayer Galileo’s Choice, Team Hawkes’ Niwot, Leon Corstens-trained four-year-old Zabeelionaire, imports Winchester and Voila Ici and Michael Kent-trained pair Unusual Suspect and Tac De Boistron.

French pair Brigantin and Shahwardi were considered big chances if they were to make the field but connections paid dearly for not running in today’s ballot exempt races as did Godolphin who saw Lost In The Moment miss out.

Ciaron Maher-trained gelding Moudre moved into the final 24 when Southern Speed was withdrawn this morning but was the unlucky runner to make way for Kelinni.

Black Caviar is at the top of her game ahead of her English debut at Royal Ascot this Saturday in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

The Bel Esprit mare has drawn the widest gate for the Group 1 race and will jump from barrier 15.

Trainer Peter Moodyis looking forward to the task of putting her English opposition to shame and demonstrating once and for all that she is the best race horse in the world.

“It is strange that we have to travel three-quarters of the way around the world to race inferior opposition for inferior prize money so she can stamp her greatness,” Moody said.

However, it appears domination on a world scale is what it will take to prove her status amongst the world’s top horses, including Frankel.

Frankel won the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this week by an unbelievable 11 lengths.

Moody does not want to risk extending Black Caviar to that degree.

“I’d love nothing more than to see her come out and win by 10 or 11 lengths,” he said.

“But we won’t be doing anything that might be to her detriment.

“The Poms have been using the Aussies as cannon fodder for 150 years, so we’re not going to put on a show just for them.

“If we’re going to let her rip, we’ll do it at home. If she wins by a quarter-of-an-inch, it’ll do us.”

The five-year-old mare has won all of her 21 race starts in Australia and will be out to extend that winning run to 22 this weekend.

It will be the fifth Group 1 in a row for Black Caviar, who has won an astounding 11 in total.

After her Diamond Jubilee run, Black Caviar will be considered for a start in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket Racecourse on July 14.

However, it is looking more and more likely she will be placed straight into quarantine on Saturday night following the Diamond Jubilee to allow her time to prepare for her Melbourne spring carnival campaign.
