Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) today announced that Westin Hotels & Resorts will be the official sponsor for professional golfer, Jim Furyk, winner of the 2010 FedEx Cup and 2010 PGA TOUR Player of the Year.
“A long-time fan of Westin, Furyk credits the brand’s wellness programming with helping him perform at his best. We’re thrilled to sponsor him as he kicks off a new year of world-class golf tournaments and ensure he is prepared to excel on the course when staying in our hotels.”
Furyk will proudly wear the Westin logo on his hat at the more than 20 events he will play this year. He will also appear in Westin marketing campaigns and make appearances at resort locations throughout the year on behalf of Westin and Starwood’s award-winning loyalty program, Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). Through the SPG MomentsSM program, which gives members access to once-in-a lifetime experiences, Starwood Preferred Guest members can bid StarpointsSM to participate in a golf clinic led by Furyk at the famous TPC Sawgrass golf course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida on March 4, 2011.
“Our sponsorship of championship golfer Jim Furyk highlights our emphasis on promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in a way that will resonate with Westin loyalists and attract new travelers and golf enthusiasts to the brand,” said Brian Povinelli, Vice President Brand Management, North America, for Westin Hotels & Resorts. “A long-time fan of Westin, Furyk credits the brand’s wellness programming with helping him perform at his best. We’re thrilled to sponsor him as he kicks off a new year of world-class golf tournaments and ensure he is prepared to excel on the course when staying in our hotels.”
Furyk, a future hall-of-famer known for consistently playing at the top level, is the winner of the 2010 FedEx Cup and was recently named 2010 PGA TOUR Player of the Year. Currently the number five player in the world and the number three U.S. golfer, Furyk has 16 career wins on the PGA TOUR and has had 45 top-10 finishes since 2006.
“I am excited to become part of the Westin family and am truly a long-time fan of the brand. I’ve stayed at Westin hotels all over the world and I credit the brand’s Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Shower with helping me perform at my absolute best while on the road,” said Furyk.
The sponsorship of Furyk follows the recent Westin and SPG sponsorship of the 2010 US Open tennis tournament. Westin was the only hotel brand to sponsor the premier tennis event, as well as US Open Live, where fans could watch live streaming of matches in progress on usopen.org.
Westin Hotels & Resorts, like all brands within Starwood’s robust portfolio, is proud to offer the Starwood Preferred Guest® program, which made headlines when it launched in 1999 with a breakthrough policy of no blackout dates on Free Night Awards. SPG offers members the ability to redeem awards at more resorts, more luxury properties, more European hotels and more golf properties than any other hotel program.
